Slate Creek Aquatic Organism Passage
WATERSHED PROTECTION
Project Profile
Materials & Equipment | 128”x83” Arched Culvert Replacement Project |
---|---|
Location: | Hill City, SD |
Owner: | Black Hills National Forest & Rocky Mountain Region |
Consulting Engineer: | Black Hills National Forest & Rocky Mountain Region |
Application: | Watershed rehabilitation and aquatic organism passage |
Special Project Elements: | The washed-out culverts were contributing sediment into the stream and impeding aquatic organism passage. The newly installed culvert allowed free movement of aquatic organisms and reduced sediment input into the creek. |
Project Challenges
High stream flows in June 2015 washed out two undersized culverts on Slate Creek Dam Road. A road closure was put in place for safety reasons, but vehicles were fording the creek causing resource damage.
