THEODORE ROOSEVELT LIBRARY

Living Case Study

The TRPL Takes Shape

Western North Dakota is known for its breathtaking Badlands, rich history, and scenic national park. Soon, it’ll be home to another attraction: the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library (TRPL). Over the past year, TRPL has been in the process of construction, and TrueNorth Steel is proud to be one of the select local manufacturers for this project. We have also partnered with Anatomic Iron to create renderings that further envision the scope of what’s to come.

WHY NORTH DAKOTA

Roosevelt’s Life in the Badlands

The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum will be built in Medora, ND as an homage to Roosevelt’s legacy. Originally from New York, Roosevelt came to Dakota Territory in 1883 with the intention of bison hunting. However, he went on to form a deep personal connection to the rugged landscape of the Badlands. These formative experiences in nature influenced his lifelong advocacy for protecting the environment. The 26th president himself credited the state for shaping his identity: “I have always said I would not have been President had it not been for my experience in North Dakota.”

The unique construction of the library seeks to honor the landscape while celebrating Roosevelt’s conservation impacts. With TrueNorth Steel providing the locally-sourced steel, the structure’s sloping design will mimic the surrounding landscape. In addition, the project is pursuing a full Living Building Challenge (LBC) certification with ambitious goals to achieve net-zero energy, emissions, water, and waste.

LOOKING FORWARD

TrueNorth Steel’s Contribution

Chosen for its sustainability, structural steel is one of this project’s many environmentally friendly aspects. We are proud to be a part of such an impactful project. The topping out ceremony commemorating the placement of the last steel beam took place on August 14th, 2024. Now halfway to completion, the rest of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library plans to open on July 4, 2026, marking our country’s 250th anniversary as a united nation. Check out our galleries to see this historic structure’s progression!
