From humble roots in Fargo, North Dakota, to becoming a nationwide leader in steel solutions, the story of TrueNorth Steel is a testament to perseverance, growth, and the enduring spirit of the American Dream. 2025 marks 80 years of delivering on our mission to create a meaningful legacy for our families and communities.
A Legacy Forged in Steel
The story of TrueNorth Steel began in 1945 when Norwegian immigrant Ole Rommesmo Sr. launched his first company, Fargo Tank. From its inception, the business was shaped by Ole Sr.’s unwavering values: integrity, humility, focus, commitment, and knowledge.
Over the decades, Fargo Tank grew into TrueNorth Steel—a trusted leader in tailored steel solutions, renowned for its quality, expertise, and innovation. These traits reflect the character of Ole Sr. and continue to define the entire TrueNorth Steel team today.
“My father would be completely shocked,” reflects CEO Ole Rommesmo Jr. on the company’s remarkable journey. Today, TrueNorth Steel employs over 800 team members across the western and southern United States.
Prioritizing client-focused growth, TrueNorth Steel has consistently pursued opportunities to enhance service and capabilities. In 2011, the company expanded into Montana and Wyoming with the acquisition of Roscoe Steel & Culvert Co.
A decade later, in 2021, TrueNorth Steel reached another milestone with the simultaneous acquisition of Beck Steel in Lubbock, Texas, and a large fabrication facility in West Fargo, North Dakota. Together, these additions increased the company’s fabrication capacity by over 450,000 square feet, strengthening capacity and extending its reach to provide exceptional products and services to clients across the nation.
