QC Inspector

Responsible for inspecting products to ensure they meet quality and contract specifications and meet external certification standards.

Essential Position Requirements:

  • Follow all company safety and quality requirements.

  • Ensure that all materials and workmanship are completed in accordance with UL, STI, API, AWS, AISC, or CWB standards, drawings and specifications, as applicable per site.

  • Inspect materials and finished goods to ensure they meet customer requirements and/or contract specifications, including but not limited to checking welds, welding consumables, base material, cut & formed parts, layout work and coatings.

  • Review welding specs and/or requirements for each project and work with team to solve fabrication challenges.

  • Document and segregate non-conforming fabricated material and workmanship.

  • Review and work with site management & shop foreman to address remedies for non-conformances and their prevention.

  • Insure Welding Specification Procedures (WPS) are current and in place for projects, as applicable per site.

  • Supervise and/or conduct Welder Qualification Test Reports (WQTR) to AWS (D1.1 and/or D1.5) and CWB standards, as applicable per site.

  • Annual calibration of welding equipment, QC inspection equipment and pre-qualifications for bolt, as applicable per site.

  • Remain current with AWS CWI and CWB Supervisor &/or Inspector licenses, code analysis, industry standards, procedures and processes, as applicable per site.

  • Understand, support and implement company Quality Management System.

  • Work with Quality Assurance & Site Managers and Shop Foreman to develop annual training programs for new and experienced employees to minimize product non-conformance.

  • Represent the company, as needed, on field issues requiring investigation and decisions associated with product quality and conformance.

  • Apply and work within appropriate controls related to Safety and Housekeeping.

  • Operate overhead crane safely.

  • Willing to work flexible hours and overtime or weekends as needed.

  • Prompt and dependable attendance.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education & Work Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED.

  • Minimum of five years welding experience, or equivalent training in manufacturing/structural steel.

  • AWS Certified Weld Inspector or Associate Inspector is preferred, as applicable per site.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Welding inspection training.

  • Any applicable standards knowledge such as AWS, CWB, API, UL, or STI.

  • A thorough knowledge of contract documents and blueprint reading.

  • Excellent math skills

  • Leadership skills to motivate co-workers to quality workmanship.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the Quality Control Inspector is regularly required to sit, using hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear well.
  • The Quality Control Inspector may be required to lift up to 50 pounds.

  • The Quality Control Inspector must be able to climb stairs, bend at the waist, twist, climb, stoop, stand, walk, grasp, pull, push, and have the full use of fingers on both hands to enable safe material handling, as well as function efficiently and safely in the outdoor work environments with exposure to weather extremes.

  • The Quality Control Inspector must be able to hear and understand verbal instructions in a shop environment, as well as effectively communicate (verbal and written) with coworkers.
